Yang Jiechi Attends the 9th Meeting of the BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues

From October 17 to 18, 2019 local time, Yang Jiechi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, led a delegation to attend the 9th Meeting of the BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues in Brasilia. The meeting is the political preparation for the BRICS Summit to be held in November. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro met with the delegation leaders of the BRICS.

Jair Bolsonaro conveyed his best wishes to the leaders of the BRICS and looked forward to meeting with the leaders of the BRICS in Brasilia soon. He said, the participating representatives had high-quality discussions, which showed the high-level cooperation among the BRICS countries. He will soon visit some Asian countries including China, and is looking forward to pushing the relations with relevant countries for new development through this visit.

Yang Jiechi expressed, as the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, the BRICS countries should strengthen solidarity and work together to deal with such changes. The BRICS should fully implement the consensus reached in previous BRICS summits and consolidate cooperation in political security, economy, trade and finance, and people-to-people exchanges. The BRICS countries should support each other, strengthen the ability to withstand risks and cope with complex situations, and jointly oppose external interventions. We should adhere to the concept of open and inclusive cooperation, promote the "BRICS Plus" cooperation model, and create an open and diverse network of partnerships. The BRICS should uphold multilateralism, champion the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and promote the development of international order in a more just and rational direction.

All participants exchanged in-depth views on counter-terrorism, cyber security, and regional and international hotspot issues, and reached broad consensus. All participants agreed to strengthen solidarity and cooperation, help work towards fruitful results of the upcoming BRICS summit in November, jointly defend multilateralism, and make greater contributions to safeguarding world peace and promoting common development.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Yang Jiechi also met with delegation leaders of Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa respectively.
